Samuel Filby
Research Fellow

Bio: Samuel Filby holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Northwestern University. His primary philosophical
interests are in ethics, aesthetics, and the philosophy of religion. While at the Center, Samuel will be
exploring Simone Weil’s claim that beauty is a precondition for responding to the suffering of others with
love and justice. He is interested in examining the ethical promises of aesthetic representations of human
affliction in general, as well as the risks such representations run.
