Research Fellow

Bio: Matthew Benton is the Seminar Fellow for the Notre Dame Summer Seminars in Philosophy of Religion, and was previously Visiting Associate Research Professor in the Center. He taught philosophy at Seattle Pacific University (2016-2025), and held postdoctoral positions at Notre Dame and the University of Oxford. He did his PhD at Rutgers University. He writes primariliy in Epistemology, Ethics, Philosophy of Language, and Philosophy of Religion, particularly on knowledge and normativity, linguistic communication, interpersonal knowledge, and on religious epistemology. His latest book Knowledge and God  was published by Cambridge University Press in 2024. Earlier he co-edited Religious Disagreement and Pluralism (Oxford University Press, 2021), and Knowledge, Belief, and God: New Insights in Religious Epistemology (Oxford University Press, 2018). His research projects at the Center this year include a book project with chapters on love and attention, and on gratitude, trust, and relational goods.
