We propose to revitalize and extend the interdisciplinary investigation of the nature of experience across philosophy, theology, religious studies, and the social sciences. The centerpiece of the project will be four large-scale RFP competitions for research funding. Three RFP competitions—one in philosophy, one in psychology, and one in sociology—target researchers in philosophy and the social sciences, and will aim at stimulating innovative research on transformative experience. One RFP competition focuses on religious and spiritual experiences and will target researchers in philosophy, religious studies, and theology, aiming to stimulate research on underexplored epistemological, conceptual, structural, and practical aspects of religious and spiritual experience. A cluster group initiative will also fund interdisciplinary discussion focused on various aspects of religious experiences, several small interdisciplinary workshops, and original research by project personnel.

We’re sponsoring a wide-ranging series of research activities and events, including:

  • residential fellowships

  • non-residential fellowships

  • conferences

  • workshops

  • publications
