The Experience Project

The Experience Project (2014-2017) revitalized and extended the interdisciplinary investigation of religious, spiritual, and transformative experience across philosophy, theology, religious studies, and the social sciences.

The centerpiece of the project was a series of four large-scale RFP competitions for research funding in philosophy, psychology, sociology, philosophy of religion, religious studies, and theology. These initiatives stimulated innovative new research on underexplored conceptual, epistemological, structural, and practical aspects of religious, spiritual, and transformative experience. Through this project's funding, nearly 150 scholars around the world expanded our understanding of significant portions of human experience.

We sponsored a wide-range of activities and events, including:

  • Residential fellowships

  • Non-residential fellowships

  • Conferences

  • Workshops

  • Academic and popular publications

  • Roundtable video series

This three-year research initiative was led by Samuel Newlands, William J. and Dorothy K. O'Neill Collegiate Associate Professor in Philosophy, University of Notre Dame, and Co-Director of the Center for Philosophy of Religion, L.A. Paul, Professor of Philosophy, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Michael Rea, Professor of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame, and Co-Director of the Center for Philosophy of Religion,
