Stephen Wykstra, Professor of Philosophy at Calvin College, will deliver the lecture entitled "Resurrecting Faith: Facts, Feelings, and Finding Our Religious Way".
College is a time when faith can seem to die--and when it can be reborn in new, deeper ways. In 1869, British logician John Venn (of "Venn diagram" fame) spoke to Cambridge undergraduates "On Some Characteristics of Belief, Scientific and Religious." Venn urged college students to consider how both evidence and emotions can interact in helping us discern religious truth. Drawing on Venn’s insights, Professor Wykstra will discuss roles for facts and feelings in resurrecting faith from our struggles with doubt.
