Fellowships

One of the most important ways of fostering interdisciplinary engagement between philosophers and theologians is to provide funding that allows members of one discipline to spend an extended amount of time conducting research in regular conversation with members of the other discipline.

Thus we announce the Residential Fellowships for Theologians Program. This program allows theologians to take a funded leave of absence to pursue research in residence at the Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame, or, in exceptional circumstances, at other major centers for research on philosophy of religion or philosophical theology.

The program will be open to full time faculty at accredited institutions who teach in theology, religion, or divinity programs.

Fellows will receive a stipend of $60,000, plus $15,000 for relocation/residential expenses. Host institutions (other than the University of Notre Dame) will receive $20,000 for the costs associated with hosting a fellow, including the provisions of office space and university privileges. Four fellowships will be awarded for the three-year duration of the project (two each in the third and fourth years of the program).

Fellowship recipients will spend one academic year in residence as fellows of the Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame. In exceptional circumstances (e.g., cases where institutions other than the Center for Philosophy of Religion are clearly better suited to provide a productive research environment for the applicant), fellows may request permission to take their residential year at another institution. The request must be made at the time of application and permission will be conditional upon the applicant’s receiving written approval to be hosted by the alternate institution. In selecting the winners of these fellowships, however, preference will generally be given to those who intend to take their residential year at the University of Notre Dame.

Sample Projects

Insofar as "analytic theology" comprises a way of doing theology rather than a particular subject area within theology, we are open to funding work on any of a variety of topics in systematic theology, the metaphysics of theism, the epistemology of religious belief, and so on. Eligible topics include, but are not at all limited to, the following: realism in theology, divine action and providence, divine incarnation and human embodiment, the nature and possibility of immortality, the doctrine of the incarnation, revelation and divine inspiration, and the nature of atonement. We also hope to fund work exploring the relationship between biblical studies and contemporary analytic philosophy—a topic which has recently been explored in various conferences through the Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame and also at the Shalem Center, Jerusalem.
